Eli Lehrer: Climate Change Real? Ask the Guys Who Could Lose Billions

President, R Street Institute

“The insurance industry validates that climate change is real and a problem.”

Eli Lehrer is the president and co-founder of the R Street Institute, a free-market think tank working to “promote free markets and limited, effective government.” He is also a believer in climate change. The reason is simple: Insurance companies believe that climate change is real. “This,” says Lehrer, “is the free-market’s validation that climate change is real and a problem.”

Prior to co-founding the R Street Institute in 2012, Lehrer was the vice-president of the Heartland Institute, a free market think tank, and was involved in founding SmarterSafer.org, “a coalition of environmental, taxpayer, housing and insurance groups working to promote risk-based insurance rates, mitigation and environmental protection.” He was also a speechwriter for U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist from Tennessee.

As an expert on emergency management and insurance, Lehrer has authored several academic book chapters and his work has appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, National Review and other publications. He was also senior editor of The American Enterprise magazine and a fellow of the Heritage Foundation.
